Scan to PDF — Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to use Scan to PDF: step-by-step instructions, settings, export options, privacy, limits and troubleshooting.

Open Scan to PDF

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP photos, or use Take a photo on a supported camera device. Use Add more photos to append pages.
  2. Select a scan page. Rotate it, draw a rectangular crop or enter pixel coordinates, and choose color, grayscale or black and white.
  3. Adjust contrast and brightness. Optionally apply color and tone to all pages without changing their individual crops or rotations.
  4. Arrange pages with Up and Down, and remove unwanted photos.
  5. Choose A4, US Letter or image-size pages, orientation, margin and JPEG quality. Export and download the PDF.

Taking clear document photos

Place the paper on a flat, contrasting surface in even light. Hold the camera parallel to the paper so text is not distorted. Avoid shadows, glare and clipped edges. Camera capture is controlled by the browser; some devices offer a file picker instead.

This scanner runs on one device. It does not pair a phone with a desktop, upload pages to cloud storage or transfer photos between devices. If capture is unavailable, take a photo with your camera app and select the saved JPG, PNG or WebP file.

Editing and arranging scans

Each image becomes one page. Cropping uses coordinates from the original orientation-corrected photo before the selected 90-degree rotation. Draw crop shows that original photo; Apply crop returns to the processed preview. Reset page restores its complete crop, color and rotation.

Grayscale removes color. Black and white uses a fixed threshold after contrast and brightness adjustment; faint text can disappear, so inspect the preview carefully. Apply color and tone to all pages keeps each page crop and rotation unchanged.

Crops are rectangular. This release does not automatically detect page corners, correct perspective or remove a background.

PDF size, quality and compatibility

A4 and Letter fit each image inside the chosen margins without stretching. Automatic orientation follows each image; portrait and landscape fix the page shape. Image-size mode uses the processed image at 96 DPI plus margins, and ignores the orientation setting.

Photos are reduced to at most 2400 pixels per side and encoded as JPEG. Lower quality usually makes a smaller file but can blur small text. Transparent images use a white background. Original camera metadata is not copied.

The output is a flattened image PDF, not an interactive or searchable document. OCR is a separate tool. Keep the original images and review every downloaded page.

Privacy and browser support

All images, previews and generated PDF contents remain in your browser. Helphonic only receives access checks and non-content usage information. Work is temporary and is not saved to your account.

Use a current browser with canvas, image decoding and file-list support. Large photos can be slow on phones. Choose fewer images if memory is limited. Cancel processing stops before publishing a download; a single synchronous image-rendering step may need to finish before cancellation takes effect.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

Access and current limits

Check the tool page for current access, remaining usage and per-operation limits. File count, per-file size, total size and page limits can depend on your access and can change. Device and processor safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. A paid pass does not necessarily increase every processing limit.

One successful export counts as one operation. Previewing and editing do not use an operation. Daily allowances reset at 00:00 UTC. Downloads of an already-created result do not count again.

If an operation cannot finish

Use a current browser and smaller inputs if the tab runs out of memory. Some tools download a local processing library or model on first use, so an internet connection is needed even though your content stays on the device.

If the tool reports that access or limits changed, review the current policy and run it again. If usage confirmation is uncertain after an interrupted connection, a retry can count as another operation. Download completed work before reloading; this site does not keep a recovery copy.

Check the current limits

Allowances and per-operation limits can change. The Scan to PDF page shows the policy that applies to you. Per-operation safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. See access passes if a tool or extra usage requires paid access.
