Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF

Make scanned PDFs searchable with local multilingual OCR. Preserve page appearance and add selectable text without uploading your document.

Unlimited Free Usage

Up to 10 selected pages, 6 million rendered pixels per page and 30 million combined. The output preserves page appearance as images and adds searchable OCR text. Only selected pages are exported. Handwriting, complex layouts and incorrectly oriented scans may need correction before OCR. Selected language models load from Helphonic; the PDF stays on your device.

Device limits

Render quality is 150, 200 or 300 DPI, automatically reduced to six million pixels and 6,000 pixels per side. The combined rendered size is limited to 30 million pixels. Select fewer pages if needed.

At most ten selected pages are recognized. The current source-page limit also applies. Processing stops after six minutes, and a single OCR request is limited to three minutes. Cancel terminates the OCR worker and PDF renderer. Output is limited to 60 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Are files or entered contents uploaded?

No. Files, edits, signature strokes and resume details are processed on your device. Helphonic supplies the application and local libraries and exchanges only non-content access and usage metadata.

Is this tool free for guests and registered users?

This tool starts with unlimited free operations for guests, registered users and active paid users. Administrators may change allowances later. The current access policy is displayed on this page; device safety limits still apply.

Is my work saved automatically?

No. Keep the original files and download your result before leaving. Editing and previews do not consume an operation. A successful confirmed export counts as one operation if allowances are enabled.

Will the recognized text be exact?

OCR can misread characters, layout, names and numbers. Review the searchable text after export. The output preserves rasterized page appearance and adds OCR text; source forms, annotations and interactive content are not retained.

How to use

Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF

Learn how to use Scanned PDF to Searchable PDF: step-by-step instructions, settings, export options, privacy, limits and troubleshooting.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose one unlocked PDF.
  2. Select pages, render quality and one or two different languages.
  3. Create the searchable PDF. Language models load from Helphonic while your document stays local.
  4. Download and check both the visible pages and searchable text in a PDF reader.
Appearance and searchable text

Only selected pages are exported, in the requested order. Each page is rendered as a PNG image, preserving the displayed rotation and page dimensions, and a Tesseract Unicode text layer is added above it. This is a real searchable PDF, not a text file or image-only PDF.

Original forms, annotations, attachments, links, metadata and existing text layers are not retained. The visible output is rasterized; it is not a lossless PDF rewrite. Existing source rotation is respected, but sideways text within a scan is not automatically corrected.

Languages and recognition quality

Choose from the 30 installed OCR models, with at most two languages per operation. Select languages matching the page. Models target upright, horizontally laid-out printed text. Handwriting, vertical text, complex tables and damaged scans can produce incorrect text.

Search and copying use recognized text, which may differ from what you see. Review important names and numbers. Blank pages can remain in a mixed document, but an operation with no recognized text is rejected.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

If an operation cannot finish

Use a current browser and smaller inputs if the tab runs out of memory. Some tools download a local processing library or model on first use, so an internet connection is needed even though your content stays on the device.

If the tool reports that access or limits changed, review the current policy and run it again. If usage confirmation is uncertain after an interrupted connection, a retry can count as another operation. Download completed work before reloading; this site does not keep a recovery copy.

About this tool

Choose a scanned PDF, select pages and one or two recognition languages, then create a searchable PDF on your device. Pages are rendered as images and overlaid with an invisible Unicode text layer. OCR accuracy depends on the scan, language and layout.
