Photo EXIF Viewer & Remover

Inspect supported image metadata and download a separate copy with selected identifying metadata removed, without re-encoding its image data.

Open Photo EXIF Viewer & Remover

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose one JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF image and review the metadata shown on the page.
  2. Leave Preserve photo rotation enabled if the image relies on an EXIF orientation tag for correct display.
  3. Read the removal scope for the source format, then run Photo EXIF Viewer & Remover.
  4. Download the cleaned copy and check its appearance, rotation and, for animated files, playback.
  5. Keep the original separately and inspect the cleaned file before sharing it.

Supported formats and metadata preview

The tool supports JPG/JPEG, PNG including APNG, WebP and GIF87a/GIF89a. It does not support HEIC, AVIF, TIFF or BMP. A valid format is identified from the file contents rather than its extension alone.

The preview can show supported EXIF tags, including camera information, dates and GPS values when present, plus supported uncompressed text or comments. Compressed PNG text is listed without decompression. The preview is bounded and is not an inventory of every possible metadata field.

What is removed

  • JPEG: EXIF and XMP in APP1 blocks, IPTC/Photoshop APP13 blocks, JPEG comments and bytes after the end marker.
  • PNG and APNG: eXIf, tEXt, zTXt, iTXt and tIME chunks, plus bytes after the end marker.
  • WebP: top-level EXIF and XMP chunks, with the container length and metadata flags updated, plus bytes after the container end.
  • GIF: Comment extensions and recognized XMP DataXMP application extensions, plus bytes after the trailer. GIF Plain Text extensions remain because they are rendered image content.

Rotation, appearance and privacy scope

With Preserve photo rotation enabled, a minimal EXIF orientation tag is retained when needed for JPEG, PNG or WebP. Other supported identifying EXIF metadata is removed. Turning preservation off also removes orientation information and may rotate or mirror the photo in readers that use it.

The image is not re-encoded. Compressed image or frame data, palettes, transparency, color profiles and animation timing, disposal and loop information are preserved. The output remains in its original format.

Unknown application markers or chunks can remain, and metadata removal cannot hide identifying information visible in the picture. This is a format-specific cleanup, not a guarantee of complete anonymization. Use Blur / Pixelate Image with solid covers for visible information you need to conceal.

Limits and troubleshooting

Choose one file within the current size limits. Structural safety checks can reject damaged files or unusually complex files even when the byte size is small. Very large metadata collections can be truncated in the on-page preview.

A file with no listed EXIF data can still contain other metadata. If the cleaned copy has unexpected rotation, start again from the original with Preserve photo rotation enabled. Keep the original if you need camera details, original timestamps or embedded information later.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

Access and current limits

Check the tool page for current access, remaining usage and per-operation limits. File count, per-file size, total size and page limits can depend on your access and can change. Device and processor safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. A paid pass does not necessarily increase every processing limit.

One successful export counts as one operation, including its multiple files or pages. Changing options and local previews do not use an operation. Current access checks must complete before the tool can release the result.

Check the current limits

Allowances and per-operation limits can change. The Photo EXIF Viewer & Remover page shows the policy that applies to you. Per-operation safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. See access passes if a tool or extra usage requires paid access.
