GIF Optimizer & Editor — Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to use GIF Optimizer & Editor: step-by-step instructions, settings, export options, privacy, limits and troubleshooting.

Open GIF Optimizer & Editor

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose a GIF and wait for its frames to be decoded locally.
  2. Use Up, Down, Remove or Reverse frames to arrange the animation.
  3. Choose maximum size, playback speed, palette colors and looping.
  4. Use Preview edited frames to check order and timing, then click Export edited GIF.
  5. Compare the original and result sizes, preview the encoded GIF and download it.

Frame composition and editing

GIF frame rectangles can depend on earlier frames. The tool composes transparency and disposal behavior into complete frames before displaying them, so removing or reordering a frame does not accidentally remove the image content needed by another frame.

Restore original order brings back removed frames. The in-tool frame preview shows the edited order and timing; the generated GIF preview also shows palette reduction. Edits are temporary and are not saved after leaving the page.

Optimization and appearance

Smaller dimensions, fewer frames and fewer colors often reduce file size. Re-encoding is not guaranteed to produce a smaller file; some well-optimized originals or reordered frames become larger. The interface reports both sizes.

GIF supports binary transparency and limited palettes. Smooth transparency and colors can change when resizing or quantizing. Playback speed scales frame delays, with a 20 ms minimum and 10-second maximum per frame; GIF delays are rounded to hundredths of a second.

Safety and unsupported GIF features

The GIF structure, dimensions and frame count are inspected before decoding. A self-hosted worker handles decoding with resource limits and a timeout. Cancel stops export encoding, and changing the file cancels its pending inspection.

GIF text rendering blocks and invalid or unsupported disposal methods are rejected. Inputs above 120 frames, 120 seconds, 1024 pixels per side or 12 million combined canvas pixels must be reduced before use.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

Access and current limits

Check the tool page for current access, remaining usage and per-operation limits. File count, per-file size, total size and page limits can depend on your access and can change. Device and processor safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. A paid pass does not necessarily increase every processing limit.

One successful export counts as one operation. Previewing and editing do not use an operation. Daily allowances reset at 00:00 UTC. Downloads of an already-created result do not count again.

If an operation cannot finish

Use a current browser and smaller inputs if the tab runs out of memory. Some tools download a local processing library or model on first use, so an internet connection is needed even though your content stays on the device.

If the tool reports that access or limits changed, review the current policy and run it again. If usage confirmation is uncertain after an interrupted connection, a retry can count as another operation. Download completed work before reloading; this site does not keep a recovery copy.

Check the current limits

Allowances and per-operation limits can change. The GIF Optimizer & Editor page shows the policy that applies to you. Per-operation safety limits still apply when usage is unlimited. See access passes if a tool or extra usage requires paid access.
