Redact PDF

Permanently cover selected PDF areas in a clean image-only document. Mark regions visually or enter exact percentages.

Unlimited Free Usage

Unlocked PDFs only. Processing stays on your device. Keep the original; editing invalidates digital signatures and may remove forms, annotations, bookmarks or other interactive features.

Manual permanent redaction: cleaned pixels are written into a NEW image-only PDF. Original text, metadata, attachments, annotations and forms are not copied. All exported pages lose searchable text and vector quality. This does not automatically find sensitive information.

Drag rectangles on the preview to cover content. Alternatively add a rectangle using percentages measured from the top-left. Navigate to mark other pages. At most 100 regions.

How to use

Redact PDF

Learn how to use Redact PDF: step-by-step instructions, settings, export options, privacy, limits and troubleshooting.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose an unlocked PDF and navigate to a page.
  2. Drag to mark each sensitive area, or enter its percentage position and size. Review the region list and remove incorrect regions.
  3. Choose the export pages and resolution, then confirm the flattened-output notice.
  4. Create the redacted PDF. Inspect every exported page before sharing and keep the original private.
Options and output

Redaction paints opaque black regions into page pixels before building a completely new PDF from those cleaned images. Original PDF text, objects, metadata, annotations, attachments and interactive fields are not copied. All exported pages become image-only; searchable text and vector quality are lost. Regions are manual: there is no automatic sensitive-data detection or text-search redaction. Review the entire document, including visible information outside the marked areas.

Compatibility and privacy

Use an unlocked PDF up to 20 MB and 100 source pages. Files and output stay in this browser. Work is not saved after leaving the page. Modifying a digitally signed PDF invalidates its signatures; retain the original. Forms, annotations, bookmarks and document-level interactive features may not survive page rewriting. These tools are not intended to preserve certified or archival conformance.

Review before sharing

Open the exported PDF and inspect every covered area at a high zoom. Confirm that all sensitive content, including other pages, is covered or excluded. Do not share the original or assume marking a few regions detects all private information.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

If an operation cannot finish

Use a current browser and smaller inputs if the tab runs out of memory. Some tools download a local processing library or model on first use, so an internet connection is needed even though your content stays on the device.

If the tool reports that access or limits changed, review the current policy and run it again. If usage confirmation is uncertain after an interrupted connection, a retry can count as another operation. Download completed work before reloading; this site does not keep a recovery copy.
