PDF to Text

Extract selectable text from a PDF locally. Choose pages, review the text and download a TXT file.

Unlimited Free Usage

Extract selectable text into a TXT file. Columns, tables and reading order may need cleanup. Scanned pages need Image to Text: export them as images first. Password-protected PDFs are unsupported.

Your PDF and extracted text stay in this browser tab. The source-page limit includes every page in the PDF, even when you select a smaller range.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. This tool processes files and entered content locally in your browser. Helphonic serves the page, scripts and any recognition models, and checks access settings. File contents, extracted text, captions, metadata values and barcode values are not sent to Helphonic or analytics.

How does usage work?

See the current access policy above. These tools launch with unlimited free usage for all audiences. If an administrator configures an allowance later, one successful export counts as one operation, including its multiple files or download formats. Per-operation device safety limits still apply.

Why are there file limits?

Processing uses your device memory and CPU. Safety limits help prevent tab crashes, especially on phones. Work is not saved to your account; download the result before leaving the page.

How to use

PDF to Text

Extract an existing selectable text layer from a PDF and review, copy or download the result as plain text.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose one PDF containing selectable text.
  2. Leave Pages blank to read every page, or enter a selection such as 1-3,5.
  3. Choose whether to include page numbers in the text.
  4. Run PDF to Text, then review and edit the result in the text editor.
  5. Use Copy text or Download edited TXT to save your corrected text before leaving the page.
Supported files and result

The input is a PDF with an existing text layer. The output is a UTF-8 TXT file. Text is read page by page; optional labels identify the original PDF page positions.

Plain text does not preserve fonts, pictures or page layout. Columns, tables, spacing and reading order can require cleanup. The editor lets you make corrections before copying or downloading an edited result.

Page selection and scanned documents

Page numbers begin at 1 and refer to the page positions in the PDF, which may differ from printed labels. Use comma-separated page numbers and ascending ranges.

This tool does not perform OCR. Pages with no selectable text are marked in a mixed result. If none of the selected pages contains text, the tool reports that no selectable text was found.

For a scanned document, use PDF to JPG / PNG to export the relevant pages, then use Image to Text to recognize the images. A PDF with a poor existing OCR layer may still produce inaccurate extracted text.

Troubleshooting

The full source PDF must fit the current page limit, even when you choose a smaller range. Text output also has character and total-size safety limits; choose fewer pages when those limits are reached.

Password-protected PDFs are unsupported. Use an unlocked copy you are authorized to process. If a damaged PDF fails, re-export a standard copy from a trusted application.

If Copy text is blocked by your browser, the tool selects the text so you can use your device Copy command. Download edited TXT includes your changes; an earlier generated download may contain the original extraction.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

About this tool

Choose a PDF with selectable text and optionally specify a range such as 1-3,5. Text is extracted page by page in your browser. Layout and reading order may differ from the original. Scanned pages without a text layer need OCR and are not recognized by this tool.
