How to use

Duplicate File Finder

Learn how to use Duplicate File Finder: step-by-step instructions, settings, export options, privacy, limits and troubleshooting.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Choose two or more files, or one file to check its unique status.
  2. Click Find exact duplicates and review the groups and downloadable report.
  3. Select one representative per group; singleton groups are included as unique files.
  4. Optionally export the selected unique copies as a ZIP. Your original files remain untouched.
Formats and important details

Duplicates mean identical complete file bytes, including metadata. Visually similar photos or matching text inside differently formatted documents are not duplicates unless every byte matches. Names and modification dates are ignored.

Only files with equal sizes need hashing. SHA-256 narrows candidates; a final byte comparison avoids relying on hash equality alone. Empty files form one identical group.

All original files stay in place. The tool offers copies and reports only; it never deletes anything. The ZIP includes one selected file from every group, including files without duplicates. Names are made safe and collisions receive a number.

Scanning and preparing a ZIP are separate successful operations if an administrator enables operation allowances. Changing the file selection clears the previous scan.

Privacy and downloads

All processing happens on this device. Successful results become available after the normal access confirmation. Keep the page open until processing finishes and save your downloads before leaving.

Processing and privacy

Files and entered content are processed on your device in this browser tab. File contents and results are not uploaded to Helphonic or sent to analytics. The page still contacts Helphonic to load its tools, check access and confirm non-content usage information. Work is not saved to your account; download or copy results before leaving or reloading the page.

If an operation cannot finish

Use a current browser and smaller inputs if the tab runs out of memory. Some tools download a local processing library or model on first use, so an internet connection is needed even though your content stays on the device.

If the tool reports that access or limits changed, review the current policy and run it again. If usage confirmation is uncertain after an interrupted connection, a retry can count as another operation. Download completed work before reloading; this site does not keep a recovery copy.

About this tool

Choose files to compare. The tool groups equal sizes, hashes candidate files with SHA-256, then verifies matching candidates byte for byte. Review the report and select a representative from each group for an optional ZIP of unique copies.
